My career started at the Bartow History Museum in 2002 where I was program support and fell in love with museum programming. I helped with museum fieldtrip programs and summer camp programs that were historically based. I soon moved to being the art teacher at the Science and Art Center. There I taught fieldtrip programs, started up the pottery programming for adults and children, designed marketing materials for the programming, and led summer camp programs.
During my time at the Science and Art Center I worked on gaining my M.Ed. in Creative Arts in Learning. The program focused on Howard Gardener’s “Multiple Intelligences” and how to create and differentiate curriculum that would engage students through the arts. The program made me a better teacher and ignited a passion in me for the arts' ability to be a tool that could reach students on a profound level.
In 2008, I moved to being the manager of the Booth Art Academy. As manager I designed children and adult programming to meet the needs of the community, managed the facility equipment, advertised the programming, and budgeted. I would teach several of the classes while also hiring contracted artists to teach programming. For the summer camp programs I started up the first youth volunteer program that was very successful and held youth exhibitions that were very well attended.
After my second child was born, I made the hard decision to stay home with my two small children. Being home with my boys was a gift that I will always treasure! During my time at home, I stayed busy and continued to work on a contracted basis. I taught summer camps, taught programs at the library, sold artwork, did graphic design, painted a mural, performed music, and continued to find creative outlets.
When both my boys were in Elementary school, I worked part-time as a graphic designer at A New Dimension. I designed business cards, logos, flyers, brochures, catalogues, and other printed materials. I really enjoyed this work but came to a point where I needed a more full-time position.
For the last four years I have been teaching art in the public school system. I enjoy inspiring student’s creativity and it has been extremely rewarding work. As you can see, my creative journey has many twists and turns, but I wouldn’t change a thing!
